why do some bulimic people still stay big?
im watching a show right now on TLC about overweight people, and they introduced a man who although isnt morbidly obese, hes still a big guy and hes had bulimia since the 1970's. if you are throwing up your food it seems next to impossible NOT to lose weight. I have heard this before (that not all bulimic people are thin)....but why is that?

Well, bulimic people binge and purge. When I say binge, I really do mean binge!!! It's not like a huge meal to you or me, it could be for example, 5,000 calories in one sitting. Now that's a lot of food. So they'll feel uncomfortable and really guilty about it, so they'll purge it out. What most people don't realize though is that even if you purge out the food, your body still has already absorbed 20% of the nutrients from the food. So that's still absorbing a big portion of what was originally eaten.
Also, the human body is very smart and efficient. If you change your eating habits, after awhile, it will learn those habits and adapt to them. This means your metabolism can also adjust.
So those are the reasons why bulimics don't normally lose weight. Instead, their weight generally tends to fluctuate up and down and will usually be around the same weight range all the time.
Btw, correction to versantl's answer: Bulimics are fully aware of their disorder. They feel extremely guilty about what they're doing to themselves, so they will often keep it a secret from everyone. It's very hard to tell if someone has bulimia or not. Usually the dentist is the first to notice by looking at the person's worn out tooth enamel.
